Aliquippa rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Ellwood City, 6-5, in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs, Ellwood City held a 5-4 lead before Aliquippa pushed two runs across in the final frame. Aliquippa would eventually win the WPIAL title.

Sharon scored four runs in the third inning and held on for a 4-3 win over Union in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs at Bessemer. Union’s Glenn Hoover held Sharon scoreless the last 4-1/3 innings and fanned eight batters. Wally Jones threw the complete game victory on a five-hitter for Sharon.

Wampum held on to defeat Sharon, 5-4, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs at Bessemer. Orrin Vance hit a two-run homer to open up a 5-1 lead for Wampum in the fourth inning. Red Mohr tossed a two-hitter and allowed just one earned run to gain the victory.

Farrell rallied to defeat Bessemer, 4-2, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs at Flaherty Field. Farrell scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to erase a 2-1 Bessemer lead. Steve Butchko fanned 11 batters and fired a three-hitter for Farrell. Bessemer’s Lyn Tanner allowed Farrell only five hits.

Beaver defeated Shenango, 8-2, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs at Beaver. Beaver held a 4-0 lead before Shenango halved the lead to 4-2 in the sixth inning. Beaver’s Bob Watterson smacked a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend the lead. Bill Kukkola was the winning pitcher. Johnny Allen hit a two-run double and Eddie Badger tripled for Shenango.

Beaver rallied past Bessemer, 9-4, in the second round of the WPIAL playoffs at Bessemer. Beaver scored six runs in the final two innings to erase Bessemer’s 4-3 lead. Bessemer scored four runs in the first two innings to jump out to a 4-1 lead. Seven different players in Bessemer’s lineup had hits. Jim Firestone threw the complete game win for Beaver.

Ellwood City rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge Beaver, 5-4, in the opening round o the WPIAL playoffs at Beaver Falls. Beaver led 4-2 before Joe Raman led off with a home run to cut the lead to 4-3. Frank Rocco followed with single and Ron Hughes doubled Rocco in to tie the score. Stan Platek singled in Rocco for the game-winner. Raman picked up the victory on the mound.

Union rolled past Evans City, 12-5, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs at Ellwood City. Ron Plano fanned 15 batters on the way to the complete game victory. Plano led Union at the plate with three hits. Ray McKay doubled and singled to lead Union. Dave Hall and Richard Pagley added two hits for Union.

Union scored their first run on a single by Joe Busin, an error and an RBI single by Richard Pagley. Ray McKay homered in the sixth inning to give Union a 2-0 lead. McKay led Union with a homer and single. Ron Hughes allowed six hits and two runs for Ellwood City.

Union downed Shenango, 6-2, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs in Ellwood City. Union scored four runs in the third inning and added two more in the fourth inning to open up a 6-0 lead. Randy Brown was the winning pitcher with Larry Roberts picking up the save by recording the last five outs on strikeouts. Bob Pezzuolo led Union with a two singles and Ray McKay added a double.

Cummings struck out 13 batters in a game-shortened to six innings due to rain. Calanese lead Beaver with a double and single. Allen and Cummings had two singles and Ward tripled for Beaver.

Ashton Ditka and Kurt Schaffer doubled for Aliquippa. Dick Young went the route to gain the victory. Ron Galbreath lead Wampum with two hits.

Ellwood City, behind the four-hit pitching of Bob Poholsky, stopped Har-Brack, 3-1, in the second round of the WPIAL playoffs at Aliquippa. Ellwood City opened up a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Bob Latiano’s 380-foot home run. John Pratt tripled and scored on Jim Bukac’s sacrifice fly to up the lead to 2-0 in the third inning. Pat White’s sacrifice fly added an insurance run in the third inning.

Ellwood City rapped 14 hits and romped over undefeated Montour, 11-2, at New Brighton in the semi-finals of the WPIAL playoffs. Toy Laitenen doubled and singled twice to lead the Ellwood City attack. Jim Bukac and Randy Chesko singled three times and Pat White added two singles. Trippy Blythe smacked a solo home run for Ellwood City. Bob Poholsky threw the complete-game win to hand Montour its first loss after fifteen straight wins.

Ellwood City became the first Lawrence County team to win a WPIAL championship by defeating McKeesport, 4-1, at Forbes Field. Bob Poholsky won his fourth straight playoff game by handcuffing McKeesport to one run on five hits. Ellwood City jumped on McKeesport with three runs in the top of the first inning. John Pratt and Trippy Blythe singled and after a ground out, Toy Laitinen drove in both runners. Randy Chesko doubled in Laitinen to up the lead to 3-0. After cutting the lead to 3-1, Ellwood City scored an insurance run in sixth inning on Chesko’s sacrifice fly. Ellwood City ended the season with a 23-2 record.

Behind a dominating performance by Jim Suskewich, Beaver Falls downed Ellwood City, 10-0, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs at New Brighton. Suskewich fired a no-hitter and fanned 15 Ellwood City batters. Henry Rousseau smacked a three-run homer and a solo homer for Beaver Falls. Lou Cywner added a two-run homer.

Rochester edged Ellwood City, 2-1, behind the arm of Tom Stimpson in the opening game of the WPIAL playoffs at Beaver Falls. Stimpson scattered five hits and struck out 16 batters in the complete-game win. Rochester took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a two-run homer by Bill Hoffmeier. In the seventh inning, Mike Laitinen doubled and Bob Schuster singled to cut the lead to 2-1. John Sharek tossed a five-hitter for Ellwood City.

Before a crowd of over 2,000 fans, Ellwood City downed cross-town rival Riverside, 3-0, in eight innings in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs held at Ellwood City’s Ewing Park. Rich Bartolomeo held Riverside to one hit over eight innings for Ellwood City. Jim Potter’s two-run triple broke open the scoreless tie. Jim DeMark tripled in Potter to up the score to 3-0. Ray Ott scattered seven hits for Riverside.

Kiski Area defeated Ellwood City, 7-4, in the semi-finals of the WPIAL playoffs held at Pullman Park in Butler. Kiski Area broke open a 4-4 tie in the fourth inning with a three-run rally to take a 7-4 lead. Ellwood City’s Jim DeMark singled, doubled and tripled in a losing cause.

Montour scored three runs in the first inning on their way to a 5-2 win over New Castle in the semi-finals of the WPIAL playoffs at Aliquippa. Bill McAnulty scattered seven hits in a complete-game win for Montour. Paul Sharenko doubled and singled to lead Montour at the plate. Ken Aven doubled and singled and Bob Skaneski singled twice for New Castle. Dave Smiley did not allow an earned run in six innings of relief work for New Castle.

Ellwood City, behind the bat of Wayne Thornhill, rallied from a 3-0 deficit to edge Center, 4-3, in the second round of the WPIAL playoffs at New Brighton. Thornhill doubled in three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the score at 3-3. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Rick Smith doubled and Thornhill completed his hero role with a single to drive in the winning run. Rich Lawson picked up the win with two innings of scoreless relief. Thornhill led Ellwood City with a double and single. Ray Smith singled twice and Rick Smith doubled for Ellwood City.

Behind the arm of Rich Lawson and the bat of Ray Smith, Ellwood City defeated Canon-McMillan, 3-1, in the quarter-finals of the WPIAL playoffs at Mt. Lebanon. Lawson allowed one earned run with eight strikeouts and Smith drove in all three runs. Smith homered in the first inning to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. In the third inning, Rick Smith singled and Wayne Thornhill doubled with one out. Ray Smith followed with a two-run single to up the lead to 3-0. Ray Smith had three singles in the game.

Ray Smith powered Ellwood City to a 6-2 win over North Hills in the semi-finals of the WPIAL playoffs at Forbes Field. In the first inning, Smith singled, stole second base, moved to third base on a wild pitch and scored on a balk to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. In the third inning, Smith doubled, stole third base and scored on Del Schuster’s single to give Ellwood City a 2-0 lead. After North Hills tied the score in the top of the fourth inning, Wayne Thornhill slapped an RBI-single and Dave Blazin popped a two-run double to up the lead to 5-2. Smith tripled in the sixth inning and scored on a wild pitch to raise the Ellwood City lead to 6-2. Jerry Bukac scattered six hits and fanned five batters. North Hills ended the season with a 21-2 record.

Rich Lawson tossed a three-hitter as Ellwood City won the WPIAL championship with a 1-0 win over Waynesburg at Munhall. Ellwood City scored the lone run in the fifth inning and held on to win its’ second WPIAL championship. With one out in the fifth inning, Rick Smith drew a walk and Wayne Thornhill dropped a single into left field. Ray Smith, reaching base for the 12th staight time in the playoffs, received a walk to load the bases. Dave Blazin followed with a groundout scoring Rick Smith to give Ellwood City a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the seventh inning, with the tying run at second base, centerfielder Doug Adams caught a sinking liner to end the game.Waynesburg’s Karl King allowed just four hits against Ellwood City. Ellwood City ended the season with a 27-2 record. Waynesburg, previously unbeaten, ended with a 19-1 record.

Pete Sheeler led Ellwood City at the plate with a triple, double and two RBI. Chuck Nardone had a double and single and Wayne Thornhill added two singles. Rick Coughlin rapped a triple.

Canon-McMillan scored three unearned runs in the third inning and went on to defeat Ellwood City, 5-0, in the quarter-finals of the WPIAL playoffs. Don Caldwell tossed a five-hit shutout in a game called in the sixth inning due to rain. Doug Kotar singled twice for Canon-McMillan. Pete Sheeler lead Ellwood City with a double and triple and Rich Potter added a double.

Ellwood City pushed a run across in the bottom of the seventh inning to slip by Mohawk, 1-0, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs at Flaherty Field. Before a crowd of over 1,000 fans, Chuck Nardone led off the Ellwood City seventh inning with a single. Nardone moved to second on a bunt, to third on a groundout and scored on a error for the game-winner. Dave Tammaro threw 6-2/3 innings of shutout ball before Rich Lawson got the final out and the win. Mohawk’s Ed Hardesty allowed just three singles and an unearned run. Gary Retone singled twice and Jerry Gagliano doubled for Mohawk.

Rick Coughlin doubled and tripled to lead Ellwood City over Valley, 6-2, in the quarter finals of the WPIAL playoffs at Shaler. Ellwood City took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Tony Pertile’s two-run single. Ellwood City added two more runs in the third inning to open up a 4-1 lead. Rich Lawson scattered nine hits to pick up the win. Chuck Nardone singled twice and Lawson added a triple.

Bethel Park, behind the shutout pitching of Bob Purkey, Jr., defeated Ellwood City, 3-0, in the semi-finals of the WPIAL playoffs at Montour. Bethel Park scored two runs in the second inning, and one run in the third inning before Ellwood City’s Rich Lawson entered and allowed just one hit in the final 4-2/3 innings. Purkey surrendered seven hits in his complete-game victory. Rick Coughlin singled twice for Ellwood City.

Ellwood City downed New Brighton, 7-1, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs at Beaver. Jeff Potter fired a three-hitter and fanned eight batters for Ellwood City. John Huffman doubled and singled and Jim Ferruchie broke the game open with a three-run triple in the fifth inning.

Ellwood City defeated Frazier, 6-2, in the second round of the WPIAL playoffs at Chartiers-Houston. Bob Maine held Frazier to five hits and struck out nine batters to gain the win. Ellwood City took a 1-0 lead on a single by Ed Prence, a groundout, a walk to John Huffman and a double steal scoring Prence. Maine followed with a single driving in Huffman, Ellwood City added three more runs in the fifth inning on a Rich Herman double and RBI-singles by Huffman and Phil Lagana. Lagana’s RBI-triple drove in Joe Mancini for Ellwood City’s final score.

Ellwood City, behind the three-hit pitching of Jeff Potter, shutdown undefeated West Mifflin North, 3-0, in the semi-finals of the WPIAL playoffs at Hopewell. West Mifflin North entered the game with a 24-0 record. Ellwood City took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Potter reached on a infield hit and headed to third base on a single by John Kish. The attempt at Potter was overthrown allowing Potter to score and sending Kish to third. Rich Herman followed with an RBI-double for a 2-0 lead. In the fifth inning, Jim Ferruchie rapped a double and scored on Potter’s single to right field. Kish and Potter lead Ellwood City with two singles apiece.

Highlands edged Ellwood City, 5-4, in the first WPIAL Championship ever held at Three Rivers Stadium. Highlands opened the scoring with an unearned run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. In the second inning, Jim Ferruchie and Tony Pertile led off with singles .After a sacrifice, both runners scored on Rich Herman single to give Ellwood City a 2-1 lead. Highlands retook the lead in the fifth inning, 3-2, on two more unearned runs. Highlands tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to up their lead to 5-2. Ellwood City mounted a furious rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. John Huffman walked and was pinch-run for by Joe Mancini. Phil Lagana singled and Mancini went to third and Lagana to second on the throw. Kim Foley hit a sacrifice fly scoring Mancini to cut he lead to 5-3. The attempt to get Lagana at third was overthrown and Lagana scored to cut the lead to 5-4. A walk and single put the tying run at second base, but winning pitcher Doug Bubash fanned the next two batters to end the game. Bubash scattered seven hits and fanned eight batters. Bubash and Mickey Kolwicz led Highlands with two singles. Lagana and Pertile had two hits apiece for Ellwood City. Potter allowed five hits with no walks and had seven strikeouts. Highlands ended the season at 19-1 and Ellwood City at 30-7.

Neshannock downed Bellevue, 4-1, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs at New Brighton in a game shortened to five innings due to rain. Bellevue took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and threatened to add more but centerfielder Jim Donnelly’s outstanding catch ended the inning. Neshannock took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Randy Crum doubled and scored on Rick McCracken’s single to tie the score. Jim Rosiek followed with double to score McCracken to give Neshannock a 2-1 lead. In the fifth inning, Neshannock upped the lead to 4-1. Mike Busin was hit by a pitch, Dean Mielke walked and both scored on Dick McClure’s double. Bellevue scored twice in the sixth inning, but the rain ended the inning and the game. Mielke picked up the victory on a six-hitter for Neshannock.

Neshannock edged Kiski Area, 4-3, in the second round of the WPIAL playoffs at Shaler. Neshannock took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI-triple by Randy Crum. Kiski Area tied the score in the bottom of the first inning. Neshannock regained the lead in the third inning on a double by Dick McClure and an RBI-single by Crum. Neshannock added two insurance runs in the sixth inning. Matt Duda doubled and scored on Mike Busin’s single to up the lead to 3-1. Busin went to second base on the throw and scored on an error. Mike Horvat smacked a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning for Kiski Area but Neshannock held on for the win. McClure allowed seven hits in the route-going win. Crum led Neshannock with a triple and two singles. McClure and Duda doubled and singled and Jim Donnelly singled twice.

Penn Hills, behind a one-hitter by Craig Kozar, shutout Neshannock, 5-0, in the WPIAL semi-finals at Shaler. Penn Hills scored two unearned runs in the top of the third inning and added another unearned run in the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead. Penn Hills added two more runs in the sixth inning on back-to-back double and an error. Jim Donnelly’s double was the only hit for Neshannock. Since the playoffs started, Penn Hils recorded 23 straight shutout innings. Dean Mielke allowed just five hits. Bellevue, behind the one-hit pitching of Dave Duffy, shutout Wilmington, 2-0, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs at Center. Andy Gogol’s RBI-double in the second inning gave Bellevue the lead. Keith Goodge allowed two runs in four innings and Rick Shoup threw two scoreless innings for Wilmington. Chuck Houlette, playing without three suspended players, had the only hit for Wilmington.

Shenango edged past Avonworth, 2-1, in nine innings in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs at Ewing Park. In the sixth inning, with Avonworth holding a 1-0 lead, Shenango’s Paul Zentz walked and moved to second base on a fly out. Marty McConahy singled and Zentz flipped the catcher and tagged the plate to tie the score at 1-1. In the bottom of the ninth, Bill Donley reached on an error, Mark Smiley walked and Andy Koterba singled in Donley with the game-winning run for Shenango. Bill Tanner allowed four hits and fanned nine batters to gain the win foir Shenango. Craig Shaffer held Shenengo to five hits and struck out 11 batters.

Burrell scored two unearned runs in the fourth inning to slip by Shenango, 2-1, in the quarter-finals of the WPIAL playoffs at Valley. Shenango took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Bill Donley was hit by a pitch, moved to third base on two groundouts and scored on Andy Koterba’s RBI-single. Burrell took the lead in the fourth inning on three errors. Tom Brakin was the winning pitcher for Burrell with relief from Tim Cavitt. Gary Staph tossed a five-hitter for Shenango without giving up an earned run. Koterba led Shenango with two hits.

Beaver Falls, behind the arm and bat of Frank Miloszewski, rolled past Wilmington, 9-1, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs at Monaca. Miloszewski allowed just three hits and fanned 14 batters on the mound. At the plate, Miloszewski doubled, singled and drove in three runs. Beaver Falls pounded out 12 hits with Rick Manzetti and Clay Forrest each adding a double and a single. Larry Rowan doubled and singled for Wilmington. Beaver Falls would become the eventual WPIAL champion.

Springdale, riding the one-hit pitching of Clint Courtney, downed Mohawk, 1-0, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs at Mars. Springdale’s Joe Leskavic hit a two-run triple in the first inning to open a 2-0 lead. Springdale added three more runs in the second innings to widen the lead to 5-0. Tim Basilone hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to complete the scoring. Courtney, who fanned five batters, allowed the only hit Rich Hennon.

Monaca edged New Castle, 2-1, in eight innings in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs at Brady’s Run Park. Monaca took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. New Castle’s Jim Donston smacked a 350-foot home run in the fourth to deadlock the score at 1-1. The score remained tied until the bottom of the eighth inning. Jim Nichol lead off with a single for Monaca and stole second base. Bill Petures followed with an RBI-single scoring Nichol with the game-winner. Petures was the winning pitcher allowing just one run on a five-hitter. New Castle’s Mark Francazio allowed just four hits and struck out 11 batters.

Hopewell pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to slip by Mohawk, 2-1, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs at Brady’s Run Park. Mohawk took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Dave Pelto’s home run. The Mohawk lead stood until the sixth inning when Hopewell tied the game at 1-1 when Randy Brown reached on an error and eventually scored on Mike Belsky’s squeeze bunt. In the seventh inning, Hopewell’s Dave Snyder lead off with a single and was pinch-run by Mark Alviani. Alviani stole second and scored on George Singer’s single. Mike Costo was the winning pitcher with 4-2/3 innings of shutout relief. Losing pitcher Paul Curry allowed just four hits and struck out nine batters for Mohawk.

Union rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Ellwood City, 5-3, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs at Flaherty Field. Ellwood City scored three runs in the second inning on an RBI-single by Jeff Conte and a two-run single by Marty Sberna. Union cut the lead to 3-1 on Kevin Guinaugh’s RBI-single. In the fifth inning, Union loaded the bases and tied the score when an errant throw on a potential inning-ending double play allowed the tying runs to score. Union broke the 3-3 deadlock in the bottom of the sixth inning. Bob Burkes walked, Jim Diamond was hit by a pitch and Guinaugh walked to load the bases. Chris Schweikert followed with a single to give Union the 5-3 lead. Winning pitcher Frank Gurgacz allowed seven hits in the route-going effort. Schweikert and Guinaugh had two hits apiece for Union. Conte had three hits and Sberna added two hits for Ellwood City.

Penn Hills scored four runs in the first inning on their way to a 6-1 win over Union in the quarter-finals of the WPIAL playoffs at Montour. Union took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Chris Schweikert singled, stole second base and scored on Fran Esposito’s single. Penn Hills countered in their half of the inning with four runs on a six hits, three for extra bases. Penn Hills added to their lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning to open a 5-1 lead. Penn Hills added their final run in the sixth inning. Penn Hills’ Gary Zeigler hurled a three-hitter and struckout eight batters in a complete-game effort. Tom Keeler led Penn Hills with two doubles and a single. Union’s Alan Burkes allowed just one run in five innings of relief.

In the sixth inning, Doug Curry rapped a leadoff 340-foot home run to give Mohawk a 2-0 lead. Mohawk’s Eric Needler made the defensive play of the game saving a potential game-tying extra-base hit. Barnes struck out 12 batters for Mohawk. Scott Davis scattered seven hits for Monaca.

Chartiers-Houston downed Mohawk, 2-0, in the quarter-finals of the WPIAL playoffs at Brady’s Run Park. Chris Dorazio held Mohawk to three hits and fanned 13 batters. Chartiers-Houston took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Steve Moskal singled, moved to third base on a fielder’s choice and scored on Jessie Bowles’ sacrifice fly. Chartiers-Houston took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning on a single by Dorazio, a double by Jim Benes and a sacrifice fly by Gary Davidson. Mohawk’s Tom Shaffer allowed two runs and seven hits.

Carmichaels scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat Neshannock, 8-5, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs at Montour. Neshannock trailed 2-0 until Brian Gahan’s double tied the score in the third ining. Neshannock took a 4-2 lead in the fifth inning on an RBI-double by Alan Sumner and an RBI-single by Jeff Fazzone. Carmichaels added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to tie the score at 4-4 and send the game to extra innings. After Carmichaels opened a 8-4 lead in the top of the ninth inning, Neshannock scored one run the bottom of the ninth inning. Bob Phillips went all nine innings and held Neshannock to four hits and fanned 12 batters. Ken Christopher had a home run and two singles to lead Carmichaels.

Wilmington romped over Freeport, 14-0, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs at Pullman Park in Butler. The game was called after 4-1/2 innings due to the ten-run rule. Wilmington banged out 11 hits-five for extra bases against Freeport. Larry Twigg had a triple, double and four RBI and Tom Ryder had a triple, single and four RBI to lead Wilmington at the plate. Doug Bleggi hit a 370-foot homer and singled and Scott Brush added a double and single. Bleggi picked up the win on a three-hitter with five strikeouts.

Wilmington defeated Monaca, 3-1, in the quarter-finals of the WPIAL playoffs at Brady’s Run Park. Wilmington opened up a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Dan Smith reached on an error and with two outs scored on Wayne Young’s single. In the fifth inning, Tom Ryder and Scott Brush singled before Dan Smith’s RBI-single to give Wilmington a 2-0 lead. Brush then scored on a double-steal to up the Wilmington lead to 3-0. Monaca cut the lead to 3-1 in the sixth inning on Tom Centi’s RBI-double. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Monaca loaded the bases with two outs. Monaca’s Dan Brenneman smashed a long fly to the left field fence which appeared to be the potential game-winning runs for Monaca. However, Wilmington leftfielder Wayne Young made a turning, twisting catch at the fence to end the game. Doug Bleggi held Monaca to seven hits to gain the win for Wilmington. Ryder and Smith led Wilmington with two hits. Centi doubled and singled twice and Mark Grater singled twice for Monaca. Grater was the losing pitcher allowing seven hits to Wilmington.

Wilmington downed Seton LaSalle, 7-1, in the smi-finals of the WPIAL playoffs at Brady’s Run Park. Doug Bleggi tosed a four-hitter and Dan Smith clouted a three-run homer to lead Wilmington. Wilmington opened a 3-0 lead in the second inning on a bases-loaded walk to Bleggi and a two-run double by Scott Brush. In the fourth inning, Smith unloaded his three-run homer to up the Wilmington lead to 6-0. Smith led Wilmington with a home run and single and Brian Kaufman added two singles. Brush and Craig Courson doubled for Wilmington. Bleggi struck out seven batters in a route-going effort. Shawn Trainor tripled and singled twice for Seton LaSalle.

Wilmington won its’ first WPIAL championship with a 2-0 win over Mon Valley Catholic at Montour. Wilmington’s Doug Bleggi and Mon Valley Catholic’s Jim Miale hooked up in a pitcher’s duel with both pitchers throwing shutout ball through five innings. In the top of the sixth inning, Mon Valley Catholic mounted the first serious threat of the game by loading the bases with one out. Bleggi got an infield pop up and a flyout to right to end the threat. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Wilmington finally broke through to take the lead. Tom Ryder walked and was sacrificed to second base by Bleggi. After a ground out, Dan Smith smacked an RBI-single to give Wilmington a 1-0 lead. Craig Courson follwed with a walk and Smith scored on Wayne Young’s RBI-single to up the lead to 2-0. Bleggi threw a scoreless seventh inning and Wilmington claimed the AA crown-the winner in a class of 63 teams. Bleggi fired a four-hitter and fanned eight batters in a complete-game outing. Ryder had two hits to lead Wilmington and Brian Kaufmann, Larry Twigg, Smith and Young added singles. Miale threw a six-hitter for Mon Valley Catholic. The win marked the 17th straight win for Wilmington.

Wilmington, behind the four-hit pitching of Doug Bleggi, shutout Conneaut Lake, 2-0. in the opening round of the PIAA playoffs at Flaherty Field. After three scoreless innings, Dan Smith singled and Craig Courson sacrificed Smith to second base. Smith scored on a ground out and passed ball to take a 1-0 lead. In the sixth inning, Scott Brush singled and worked his way around the bases scoring on a Couson sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead. Bleggi allowed just four hits and fanned eight batters in the complete-game victory. David Havned was the losing pitcher despite allowing only two hits.

In a rematch of the WPIAL championship, Wilmington defeated Mon Valley Catholic, 6-3, in the quarter-finals of the PIAA playoffs at Montour. Tom Ryder rapped four hits and drove in three runs to lead Wilmington. Dan Smith took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and ended up allowing three hits in 6-1/3 innings to gain the win for Wilmington. Wilmington jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a single by Tom Ryder, an RBI-double by Doug Bleggi and a two-run homer by Scott Brush. Ryder’s two-run triple in the fourth inning opened up a 5-0 lead for Wilmington. Mon Valley Catholic pushed across single runs in the fifth and sixth inning to narrow the lead to 6-2. Wilmington scored their seventh run in the seventh inning on a double by Wayne Young and an RBI-single by Ryder. Mon Valley Catholic added another run in the bottom of the seventh inning before Bleggi relieved and fanned the last two batters. In addition to Ryder, Brian Kaufmann had a multiple-hit game with two singles for Wilmington.

Wilmington scored the winning run on Brian Kaufmann’s single to edge Southern Fulton, 2-1, in nine innings in the PIAA semi-finals at Mt. Pleasant. Wilmington’s Doug Bleggi and Southern Fulton’s Bart Elbin battled on the mound for nine innings. Southern Fulton scored in the opening frame on a single by Brian Pittman and an RBI-double by Elbin to take a 1-0 lead. Southern Fulton threatened to break the game open with the base-loaded and none out. But Bleggi got a forceout at home plate and a double-play ball to end the inning. Wilmington tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth inning on a single by Scott Brush and a RBI-double by Craig Courson. Both pitchers threw scoreless ball until the bottom of the ninth inning. Wilmington’s Wayne Young led off with a single and stole second base.This set the stage for Kaufmann’s winning single to right field. Bleggi allowed six hits over nine innings and fanned 10 batters. Elbin allowed just three hits and struck out 11 batters. Elbin also rapped three singles for Southern Fulton.

Wilmington defeated Octarara at Shippensburg University to win the first PIAA Championship in Lawrence County history. The victory was the 21st straight win for Wilmington, including eight straight playoff wins. Doug Bleggi threw the complete-game win with a four-hitter for Wilmington. Wilmington jumped out to a lead in the first inning. Tom Ryder singled, stole second base and moved to third base on Dan Smith’s single. Ryder scored on a wild pitch as Wilmington took a 1-0 lead. Octorara tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning. In the third inning, Wilmington retook the lead for good. Ryder singled and Bleggi followed with an inside-the-park home run to give Wilmington a 3-1 lead. Scott Brush followed with a single and Dan Smith reached base on an error. Craig Courson follwed with a two-run triple to stretch the lead to 5-1. Wilmington added single tallies in the sixth and seventh inning. In the sixth inning, Courson walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch and in the seventh inning, Ryder singled and scored on a wild pitch. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Bleggi recorded the final out to give Wilmington the PIAA championship. Wilmington ended the season with a 24-2 record.

Swissvalle defeated Wilmington, 5-2, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs at Pullman Park in Butler. Wilmington jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Scott Moesta’s double followed by Wayne Young’s homer over the 370-foot mark. Wilmington held the lead until Swissvale erupted for five runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-2 lead. Winning pitcher Gary Kent held Wilmington scoreless after the first inning. He allowed just four hits and fanned eight batters. Eric Chizmar led Swissvale with three hits. Nick Napolitano and Ron Reynolds added two singles. Young homered and singled to lead Wilmington.

Mars outslugged Laurel, 11-8, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs at Pullman Park in Butler. After Laurel took an early 5-1 lead after four innings, Mars scored five runs in the fifth inning and three runs in the sixth inning to take a 9-5 lead. Laurel sliced the lead to 9-7 in the sixth inning but Mars added two more runs in the seventh inning and hung on for the victory. Mike Hensel picked up the win in relief. Rob Fester smacked two doubles to lead Mars. Mike Nail tripled and singled to lead Laurel. Scott Filby doubled and had three RBI and Jeff Anderson added a double.

New Brighton, behind a 3-hitter by Rick Shoaff, downed Wilmington, 5-1, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs at Brady’s Run Park. New Brighton took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and added three more runs in the third inning to open up a 4-0 lead. Shoaff fanned six batters in a route-going effort. Leon Thomas doubled and singled and Jim Potts added two singles for New Brighton. Tood Shearer had an RBI-single for Wilmington in the sixth inning and Brian Kaufmann and John Allison added singles.

Laurel held off Monaca. 5-4 in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs at Pullman Park in Butler. Laurel scored three runs in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Doug Mershimer led off with a triple and scored on a single by Dan Heasley. Doug McCoy rapped an RBI-double scoring Heasley to up the lead to 2-0. Dwayne Gibson singled to knock in McCoy to open up a 3-0 lead. Monaca scored a run in their half of the second inning but Laurel added two more runs in the third inning. After two errors put runners in scoring position, Mershimer knocked both runners home with a single to give Laurel a 5-1 lead. Monaca added a run in the third inning and two more runs in the fifth inning to slice the lead to 5-4. However, Monaca did not score again and stranded 13 runners along the way. Mershimer was the winning pitcher but need three innings of one-hit relief from Gibson. Matt Deinert doubled and singled and Spike Bintrim singled twice for Laurel. Mike Raich had three singles for Monaca.

Quaker Valley rode the arm of Eric Weber to a 4-1 win over Laurel in the quarter-finals of the WPIAL playoffs at Brady’s Run Park. Laurel took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a RBI-single by Dwayne Gibson. The lead held up until the sixth inning when Quaker Valley scored four runs. With two runners in scoring position, Tom Foster singled to give Quaker Valey a 2-1 lead. An error and an errant pickoff score allowed two more runs to score to up the Quaker Valley lead to 4-1. Weber retired Laurel in the seventh inning to complete the win. Weber allowed four hits and fanned nine batters. Scott Campbell scattered eight hits and allowed two earned runs for Laurel. Tom Szuba doubled and singled twice for Quaker Valley and Foster singled twice. Campbell singled twice and Spike Bintrim and Gibson added singles for Laurel.

Neshannock downed Southside Beaver, 5-1, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs at Brady’s Run Park. Tyler McQuiston scattered nine hits and and fanned eight batters in a complete-game win. After three scoreless innings, Neshannock took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. Ed Covert singled, went to second base on an error, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Rick Schleich’s single. After a wild pitch, Todd Calasandra singled to up the Neshannock lead to 2-0. In the fifth inning, two errors, a wild pitch and a Covert RBI-single gave Neshannock a 4-0 lead. Neshannock added their final run in the seventh inning on a double by McQuiston and a RBI single by Schleich. Southside Beaver scored two runs in their final at bat to cut the score to 5-2. Covert led Neshannock with a double and two singles. Todd Calasandra doubled and singled and Schleich singled twice.

Northgate jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and stretched the lead to 6-0 in the fourth inning. Neshannock tallied their lone two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a RBI-single by Rick Schleich and a sacrifice fly by Bryan DeLorenzo. Winning pitcher Bob Andrews threw a seven-hitter and fanned eight batters. Jack Peck doubled and singled to lead Northgate. John Snow singled twice for Neshannock.

Jerry Gozolick allowed six hits in a route-going effort for Leechburg. Bill Vasilko doubled twice and singled and Mike Querio added three singles to lead Leechburg. Kevin Kerr led Neshannock with a double and single.

Riverview scored three runs in the top of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. Neshannock sIiced the lead to 3-1 on a Tom Linton double and an RBI-single by Ed Covert. Riverview added two runs apiece in the second and third innings to take a 7-1 lead. Both teams added a run in the fourth inning with Neshannock scoring on a solo home run by Brian DeLorenzo. Collins threw the first four innings for Riverview to pick up the win. Mike Juliano threw three scoreless innings in relief to gain the save. Albert Caruso, Tom Dinnin and Pat Shields had two hits apiece for Northgate.

In the second inning both teams scratched out an unearned run to keep the score knotted at 2-2. Ford City rallied for three unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 5-2 lead. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Brad Kaufmann singled and scored on a Chris Osborne’s double to cut the lead to 5-3. Butch Edwards followed with a double scoring Osborne to slice the lead to 5-4. However, Ford City reliever Dennis Harringer, after surrendering an Edwards’ double, retired the last eight batters to pick up the save. Brian Gilbertson went four innings to pick up the win for Ford City. Losing pitcher Chris Osborne allowed only one earned run for Wilmington.

In the fourth inning, Union’s Chuck Brogan tripled and Steve Shaffer smacked a line drive over the 400-foot mark in center to give Union a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Jason McCroo doubled and scored on a single by Fred Hanlin to deadlock the score at 2-2. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Leechburg scored the eventual winning run when Ed Tola doubled and scored on an error to give Leechburg a 3-2 lead. Jerry Guzolik threw a complete-game six-hitter to get the win for Leechnburg. DeCroo doubled and singled to lead Leechburg. Union’s Shaffer threw a six-hitter and homered and singled at the plate.

Elderton downed Laurel, 8-3, in the quarter-finals of the WPIAL playoffs at Pullman Park in Butler. Elderton opened up a 4-0 lead in the second inning. Laurel scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings to cut the lead to 4-3. Elderton scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull away. Matt Risko led Elderton with a double and two singles. Ray Blystone and and Bob Merriman added a double and a single. Tom Hilton led Laurel with a double and two singles. Chad Prugh was the winning pitcher and Risko nailed down the save for Elderton.

Ford City exploded for thirteen runs in the third inning on the way to a 14-3 win over Wilmington in the quarter-finals of the WPIAL playoffs at Pullman Park in Butler. Ford City sent 18 batters to the plate in the third inning which included a three-run homer by Bruce Baillie and two-run triples by Bill Zell and Jim Dunlap. Ford City’s Curt Walbert allowed four hits in a route-going effort. Baillie homered and singled twice and Gus Ferrotte doubled and singled to lead Ford City at the plate. Chris Osborne doubled for Wilmington.

Rochester downed Shenango, 12-4, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs at Aliquippa. Rochester led 3-1 before Shenango took a 4-3 lead on Scott Janiel’s three-run homer in the third inning. Rochester retook the lead, 5-4, with two runs in the fourth inning. Rochester decided the game with seven runs in the top of the seventh inning. Bill Harper led Rochester with a triple, single, two RBI and three runs scored. Frank Bauer, John Whippo and Eric Grant each added a double and single. Grant was the winning pitcher with Whippo in relief.

Shenango scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Monaca, 5-1, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs at Brady’s Run Park. With two outs T. J Kamerer singled, Jeff Cwyner walked and after a wild pitch, Brad Zeigler was intentionally walked to load the bases. Lance Hill drew a walk to score Kamerer to knot the score at 1-1. Roger DeCarbo followed with a two-run single to give Shenango a 3-1 lead and Mike Baker and Dwight Heminger added RBI-singles to up the lead to 5-1. Winning pitcher Cwyner allowed six hits and fanned six batters. Kamerer, Baker and Heminger each had two hits for Shenango. Losing pitcher Shawn Fredericks struck out 11 batters for Monaca. Brian Porter singled twice for Monaca.

Shenango edged Leechburg, 2-1, behind the seven-hit pitching of Lance Hill, in the quarter-finals of the WPIAL playoffs at Brady’s Run Park. After Leechburg opened a 1-0 lead in the first inning on triples from Tony Favero and Dan Phillips, Hill held Leechburg scoreless the rest of the way. Brad Zeigler’s RBI-single tied the score in the bottom of the first inning. Zeigler’s bases-loaded walk in the third inning proved to be the game-winning run. Hill struck out seven batters in a route-going effort for the win. Leechburg’s Shane Steele was the losing pitcher with Phillips in relief. Phillips tripled and singled for Leechburg.

Shenango scored twelve runs in the fourth inning and rolled past Canevin, 13-3, in the semi-finals of the WPIAL playoffs at Aliquippa. Shenango sent 15 batters to the plate and totaled seven hits in the inning the key hits in the inning were RBI-doubles by Jeff Cwynar and Brad Zeigler, a two-run single by Lance Hill and a two-run triple by Roger DeCarbo. Brad Zeigler, Lance Hill and Rick Zeigler led Shenango with a double and single apiece. Cwynar threw a complete-game seven-hitter to gain the win for Shenango.

Center won its’ second straight WPIAL Championship with a 6-3 win over Shenango at Pullman Park in Butler. Center scored in the top of the first inning and Shenango tied it in their half on Jeff Cwynar’s triple and a RBI-single by Brad Zeigler. Center took a 2-1 lead in the second inning on a RBI-triple by a Bob Magill and strteched the lead to 3-1 on Scott Morrison’s solo home run in the third inning. Center added another run in the fourth inning to up their lead to 4-1. In the bottom of the inning, Shenango loaded the bases with none out. But Center’s Sean Carroll fanned the next three batters to end the threat. Shenango cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Cwynar tripled in a run and scored on a groundout to slice the lead to one run. The lead remained one run until the top of the seventh inning when Center opened a 6-3 lead on a RBI-triple by Carroll followed by a groundout. Carroll closed out the seventh inning to give Center its’ 19th straight win and the title. Carroll ended with a five-hitter and 14 strikeouts. He also led Center with triple and single. Cwynar led Shenango with two triples.

Shenango took an early 6-0 lead and defeated Conemaugh Valley, 9-5, in the opening round of the PIAA playoffs in Johnstown. Shenango scored two runs in the first inning and added four more in the second inning to jump out to a 6-0 lead. Conemaugh Valley cut the lead to 6-3 after three innings and both teams exchanged runs in the fifth inning. Shenango added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning to stretch the lead to 9-4. Conemaugh tallied one run in the bottom of the seventh inning. William DeCarbo led Shenango with a triple, single and three runs scored. Brad Zeigler and Rich Zeigler each doubled and singled and Jeff Cwynar singled twice. Cwynar scattered seven hits and fanned seven batters to get the win. Pat Berzonski tripled and singled twice for Conemaugh Valley.

Forest Hills pushed a run across in the bottom of the seventh inning to nip Shenango, 6-5, in the PIAA quarter-finals at Riverview. Forest Hills held a 1-0 lead before Shenango rallied in the fifth inning. Brad Zeigler rapped an RBI-single and Dwight Heninger drove in two more runs as part of a four-run inning giving Shenango a 4-1 lead. But the lead was short-lived as Forest Hills retook the lead, 5-4, with a four-run rally in their half of the inning. Shenango knotted the score at 5-5 in the top of the sixth inning on Mike Baker’s RBI-single. But in the seventh inning Forest Hills would score the game-winner. Dan Susko lead-off with a walk, moved to second base on another walk and to third base on a fielder’s choice. Bob Albertelli grounded to third base and was thrown out at first base but Susko scored on the throw from first base to home. Dan Wolfhope was the winning pitcher for Forest Hills. He allowed seven hits and fanned 17 batters. Albertelli led Forest Hills at the plate with a double and single. T.J. Kamerer led Shenango with a double and a single.

Neshannock, behind the arm and bat of Anthony Ascione, defeated Mars, 4-2, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs at Knoch. On the mound, Ascione tossed a four-hitter and rapped three singles at the plate. Neshannock took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Ascione singled, stole second base and scored on Joe Zimalong’s RBI single. Mars scored in the bottom of the second inning to knot the score at 1-1. Neshannock scored three runs in the fifth inning to take command of the game. Ascione and Brad Sizer singled to lead off the inning. Dan Messner knocked in Ascione with a single to give Neshannock a 2-1 lead. Zimalong followed with a single scoring Sizer to up the lead to 3-1. Zimalong eventually scored on a groundout to give Neshannock thir fourth run. Mars cut the lead to 4-2 in the sixth inning bt went scoreless in the seventh inning. Winning pitcher Ascione fanned 11 batters in a route-going effort. Ascione, Zimalong and Adam Morrone each had three singles for Neshannock. Ron Talik singled twice for Mars.

Neshannock rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to edge West Allegheny, 18-17, in the quarter-finals of the WPIAL playoffs at Aliquippa. Neshannock trailed 11-5 before scoring five runs in the third and fourth inning to take a 15-11 lead. However, West Allegheny forced extra innings with one run in the sixth inning and three runs in the seventh inning to knot the score at 15-15. West Allegheny scored twice in the top of the eighth inning to take a 17-15 lead. Neshannock rallied once again in their half of the inning. Dan Messner reached on an error before Joe Zimalong smashed a two-run homer to tie the score at 17-17. After Mike Sullivan drew a walk, Wally Cunningham follwed with a single sending Sullivan to third base. Adam Marrone followed with a single scoring Sullivan with the game-winner. Zimalong led Neshannock with a home run, two doubles, a single and four RBI. Brad Sizer added two doubles, a single and three RBI and Adam Morrone and Anthony Ascione both homered and singled with three RBI. Mike Sullivan tripled, singled and drove in three runs and Dan Mesner singled twice with two RBI. Messner picked up the win in relief of Neshannock. Dean Schavolt had four singles and five RBI for West Allegheny.

Anthony Ascione threw a no-hitter and drew a bases-loaded walk as Neshannock edged past East Allegheny, 1-0, in eight innings in the WPIAL playoff semi-finals at Flaherty Field. Ascione and his mound opponent, East Allegheny’s A.J. Rusnak held their opponents without a hit through the first seven innings. Ascione continued his no-hitter through the top of the eighth inning, but Rusnak would lose his no-hitter in the bottom of the inning. Sam Pickel reached on an infield single and went to second base on the wild throw to first base. Mike Sullivan walked and Wally Cunningham loaded the bases on a bunt single. After a failed suicide-squeeze play resulted in an out, Adam Morrone walked to re-load the bases. After a second squeeze-play ended in a force out at the plate, Ascione walked on a 3-1 pitch sending Cunningham with winning run. Ascione fanned 12 batters on his way to the no-hitter for Neshannock. Losing pitcher Rusnak, allowing just two infield singles, struckout nine batters for East Allegheny.

Neshannock won its’ first WPIAL championship with a 3-1 win over Washington at Flaherty Field. Winning pitcher Wally Cunningham threw a four-hit complete-game for Neshannock. Neshannock took the lead in the first inning with a two-out rally. Dan Messner and Joe Zimalong hit back to back singles before Sam Pickel ripped a double to left field scoring both runners to open up a 2-0 lead for Neshannock. In the fourth inning, Anthony Ascione reached base and eventually worked his way to third base before scoring on Brad Sizer’s single to raise the lead to 3-0. Cunningham, who had a no-hitter through four innings, allowed Washington one run in the seventh inning. Zimalong led Neshannock at the plate with a double and two singles. Sam Pickel doubled and singled and drove in two runs. Joe McCullough doubled and singled for Washington. Neshannock raised its’ recored to 20-1.

Leechburg banged out 11 hits and downed Wilmington, 7-3, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs at Knoch. Leechburg took a 5-0 lead after two innings before Shenango scored twice in the third inning to slice the lead to 5-2. Leechburg got a run back in the fourth inning and both teams exchanged runs in the sixth inning. Mike Skwirut tripled and singled twice and Scott McCullough singled twice to lead Leechburg. Brian Luffey singled twice and Brad and Ron Zeigler added doubles for Wilmington. Winning pitcher Shawn Steele threw a complete-game six-hitter for Leechburg.

Neshannock erased a 3-0 deficit and defeated West Branch, 7-5, in the quarter-finals of the PIAA playoffs at Clarion University. West Branch scored a single tally in the first inning and two runs in the third inning to open a 3-0 lead. Neshannock knotted the score in the bottom of the third inning. Anthony Ascione singled and Brad Sizer walked. After a wild pitch, Dan Messner hit a sacrifice fly scoring Ascione to cut the lead to 3-1. Joe Zimalong singled to score Sizer and Sam Pickel tripled in Zimalong to tie the score at 3-3. Neshannock took a 5-3 lead the fourth inning on Messner two-run single. West Branch narrowed the lead to 5-4 with a run in the fifth inning. In the sixth inning, Neshannock scored two runs which proved to be the winning margin. Ascione was hit by a pitch and scored on a triple by Sizer. Messner followed with a single extending the lead to 7-4. West Branch added a single run in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the final margin, 7-5. Messner led Neshannock with two singles and a sacrifice fly and four RBI. Pickel tripled and singled and Ascione singled twice. Todd Ryen hit three singles for West Branch. Wally Cunningham was the winning pitcher for Neshannock with relief help from Ascione and Zimalong.

Neshannock scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning to down West Middlesex, 6-1, in the PIAA semi-finals at Flaherty Field. Neshannock’s Anthony Ascione threw a no-hitter for six innings. Ascione was helped by third baseman Dan Messner in the third inning who snagged a line drive- turning a possible extra-base hit into a double play in the fifth inning. Neshannock finally opened the scoring in the sixth inning when Ascione doubled and scored on Sam Pickel’s single. West Middlesex tied the score at 1-1 in their half of the inning on three walks and an error. In the seventh inning after a leadoff walk, Joe Zimalong replaced Ascione. Zimalong allowed a hit but kept West Middlesex off the board. Neshannock took command of the game in extra innings. Brad Sizer walked, stole second base and scored on error to break the tie. Before the inning ended Neshannock scored five runs on a Wally Cunningham bunt single and an RBI-single bt Adam Morrone and a Mike Bonner two-run double. Ascione and Bonner doubled and singled to lead Neshannock. Pickel added two singles. Zimalong picked up the win with two innings of relief work.

Behind the strong arm of Dave Stoker, Central Columbia defeated Neshannock, 7-2, in the PIAA Championship game at Shippensburg University. Stoker held Neshannock to four singles and fanned 12 batters. Central Columbia scored three unearned runs in the the first inning to forge a 3-0 lead. Central Columbia widened the lead to 7-0 with a four-run fifth inning. Brett Sarnoski smacked an RBI-double and Eric Novak and John Williams added RBI-singles in the inning. Neshannock scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Dan Messner and Joe Zimalong singled and Sam Pickel walked to load the bases. Mike Sullivan followed with a two-double to make it 7-2. Stoker fanned the side in the seventh inning to end the game. Stoker’s win completed a 16-0 record on the season. Losing pitcher Wally Cunningham allowed seven hits and just three earned runs. Sarnoski and Williams led Central Columbia at the plate with a double and single. Zimalong singled twice for Neshannock. Central Columbia ended the season with a 25-1 record. Neshannock finished at 23-2.

Laurel, backed by the big bat of Jesse Drespling, defeated Wilmington, 8-2, in a preliminary game at Flaherty Field. Drespling smacked a first-inning grand slam to help open up a 5-0 lead. After Wilmington narrowed the score to 6-2 in the sixth inning, Drespling delivered a two-run single to give Laurel a 8-2 cushion. Bill Cook was the winning pitcher allowing seven hits in a complete-game effort. Drespling drove in six runs with his grand slam and single for Laurel. Luke Miller added two doubles and Shawn Edie two singles for Laurel.

Laurel retook the lead for good in the bottom of the inning. Carlson singled and Bill Cook walked. After Shawn Edie forced Carlson, Cook and Edie pulled a double steal. Unbeaten Canevin defeated Laurel, 3-1, in the quarter-finals of the WPIAL playoffs at Flaherty Field. Canevin raised their record to 18-0 behind the five-hit pitching of Pat Naughton. Canevin took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Todd Priddy’s RBI-single. Caneven added two more runs in the third inning on a Keith Brittner RBI-single and an error to take a 3-0 lead. Laurel added an unearned run ithe sixth inning for their only score. Naughton went the route to gain the win for Canevin. Bill Cook allowed just two earned runs for Laurel on a six-hit, eight strikeout performance.

Joe Nardone singled in Murphy to make it 3-0. Nardone moved to second on the throw and a groundout and scored on Sam Pelloni’s sacrifice fly to give Ellwood City a 4-0 lead. Plum scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning to slice the lead to 4-2. Plum threatened to cut the lead further but rightfielder Welsh threw out a Plum runner at the plate to end the inning. Winning pitcher Mike Hall threw a three-hit, seven strikeout complete game for Ellwood City. Mike Pelloni led Ellwood City with a home run and single. Blake Schilling doubled and singled and Murphy tripled.

After a walk to Jeff Jones, Allison scored on an error to open up a 2-0 lead for Shenango. In the fifth inning, Shenango added two insurance runs. Mike Dado singled and Shawn Stalker was hit by a pitch. After a wild pitch moved both runners up, Graham followed with an two-run single to give Shenango a 4-0 lead. Dado led Shenango with a double and single and Allison added three singles. Chris Very led Brentwood with two singles.

Shenango took advantage of six walks, two hit batsmen and four errors to roll past New Brighton, 12-4, in the WPIAL AA quarter-finals at Flaherty Field. Shenango’s lineup managed only seven hits on the way to their twelve-run scoring production. Brandon Mangino singled twice and drove in four runs to lead Shenango at the plate. Mike Dado added an two-run single. Jason Grurina was the winning pitcher for Shenango on four innings of work. Managino finished the game with a three-inning save.

Seton LaSalle edged Shenango, 4-3, in eight innings to win the WPIAL AA Championship at Pullman Park. Mike Wagner hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning to bring home the winning run for Seton LaSalle. Shenango took an early 1-0 lead on singles by Shane Lanigan and Mike Dado and a groundout by Shawn Stalker. Seton LaSalle tied the score at 1-1 with a run in the second inning. Shenango retook the lead 2-1 in the third inning when Lanigan doubled and scored on an error. In the fourth inning, Seton LaSalle forged back ahead 3-2 on four straight singles. In the fifth inning, Lanigan scored his third run of the game by scoring on James Graham’s RBI-single to knot the score at 3-3. After two scoreless frames forced extra innings, Seton LaSalle scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Wagner went the distance to gain the win for Seton LaSalle. Mars scored five runs in the third inning and held off Shenango, 6-4, in the PIAA AA quarter-finals at Pullman Park. Shenango took an early 1-0 lead on Shawn Stalker’s RBI-single in the first inning. Mars tied the score in the second inning and took a 6-1 lead with the five-run outburst in the third inning. Shenango sliced the lead to 6-3 in the fourth inning. Mike Dado singled and James Graham reached on an error before Joe Owens delivered a two-run single. In the seventh inning, James Delaney tripled and scored on Matt Allison’s RBI-single to shave the lead to 6-4 before the comeback ended. Brandon Steiner was the winning pitcher for Mars. Burrell broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the seventh inning to knock off Shenengo, 4-1, in the opening round of the WPIAL AA playoffs at Flaherty Field. Jason Gregg hit a two-run double in the top of the seventh inning for Burrell. Burrell took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning and Shenango tied the score on Jeff Jones’ RBI-single in the bottom of the fifth inning. Carlynton rallied for two runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to hand Neshannock a heartbreaking 5-4 loss in the quarter-finals of the WPIAL AA playoffs at Flaherty Field. Neshannock’s Drew Rainey was one pitch away from a no-hitter before Carlynton rallied in their final at-bat. Trailing 4-3 with two outs and none on, Carlynton’s Rick Taltotta smacked an 0-2 pitch well over the 375-foot left field fence to tie the game at 4-4. Justin Scott followed with a single, stole second base and scored on Andy Evans single to score the game-winning run. Neshannock opened up a 4-0 lead in the second inning. Andy Fortuna rapped an RBI-double to give Neshannock a 1-0 lead. David Hasson reached on an error allowing Fortuna to score to up the lead to 2-0. Rick Giordano hit a double scoring Hasson making it 3-0. Sean Santiago followed with an RBI-single scoring Giordano to raise the lead to 4-0. Carlynton, benefitting from two hit batsman, two walks and two errors skiced the lead to 4-3 after three innings. More details to follow.

Franklin Regional scored eight runs in the sixth ining to pull away and defeat Ellwood City, 13-2, in the preliminary game of the WPIAL AAA playoffs at Pullman Park. Ellwood City took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Rocky Carsele double and an error. Franklin Regional scored three runs to take a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning. Ellwood City cut the lead to 3-2 with back-to-back doubles by Justin Aquino and Neil Blazin in the fifth inning. Vince Harding homered for Franklin Regional in the sixth inning to up their lead to 4-2. Franklin Regional added seven more runs to take a commanding 11-2 lead. Scott LeDuc was the winning pitcher with a three-hit, 11 strikeout performance for Franklin Regional. More details to follow.

Union erased a first inning 4-0 deficit to rally past Western Beaver, 6-4, in the preliminary game of the WPIAL AA playoffs at Pullman Park. Jason Stiger smacked a 430-foot grand slam home run in the first inning to account for the 4-0 lead. However, Union bounced right back with a six-run second inning to take a 6-4 lead. Neither team scored the rest of the game. Western Beaver was held in check by Matt DeSalvo who survived the first inning to throw six scoreless innings the rest of the way. DeSalvo allowed just two hits for the game and fanned 15 batters on the way to the victory. More details to follow.

Carlynton scored four runs in the third and sixth innings on the way to a 9-3 win over Union in the opening round of the WPIAL AA playoffs at Pullman Park. After Union cut the lead to 5-2 in the fifth inning, Carlynton scored four runs in the sixth inning to pull away. Jason Tremblay led Carlynton with a double and three singles. Tremblay also picked up the victory on the mound by scattering nine hits and fanning seven batters. Russ Hedlund and Shawn Million doubled and singled for Union.
